Are people always lumped together by age group?

I hate to define an entire age group by the worst-behaved ones in that group. I remember interviewing for office jobs right after high school to be told by some that "all girls your age do is sit around chatting on the phone when the boss is away instead of doing their job" as a reason not to hire me. I took my work seriously.
