How do I prepare a portobello?

I've always used canned mushrooms in my marinara, but I picked up a fresh mushroom today. I wanted to get the same sort of moistness I'm used to from a can, though. How do I prepare the mushroom? I've heard I'm not supposed to soak it in water, so i wasn't sure what I should do with it.
